Course Description: This course describes how to connect one or more personal computers to an AS/400 system using the Client Access/400 family of products.
The course begins with a review of the relationship between the server programs that execute on the AS/400 and the Client Access/400 client programs that execute on the PC. The course then introduces an 11-step procedure for implementing a PC-to-AS/400 connection using Client Access/400. Subsequent sessions of the course describe each step of the process in greater detail. Special attention is given to the first three steps of the recommended procedure.
The first step of the process is to plan for the installation. The course concentrates on those areas in which the installation of Client Access/400 differs from the installation of other software products. The second step of the process is to install the hardware that is needed to make the physical connection between a PC and an AS/400. Direct connections, LAN connections, and remote connections are all described. The third step of the process involves installing Client Access/400 on the AS/400 system. During this discussion, you will perform a simulated installation and check the results of your efforts.
The remaining steps of the recommended procedure which are repeated for each PC can be divided into two groups: those performed on the AS/400 and those performed on each client PC. While this course provides an overview of these steps, the details are provided in the remaining courses of this series.
After completing this course, you should be able to: Identify the relationship between the server programs Client Access programs Identify steps involved in connecting a PC to an AS/400 Identify the issues to install Client Access/400 Specify the number of Client Access/400 licenses required for a given configuration Identify the various ways to connect personal computers to an AS/400 system Identify possible PC-to-AS/400 connection plans Name a PC-to-AS/400 connection type, given a diagram of the physical links Determine which Client Access/400 clients and features are installed on an AS/400 Identify the OS/400 option that must be installed for Client Access/400 Install a Client Access/400 client on an AS/400 system Describe how Client Access/400 client programs and files are stored on an AS/400 Identify the AS/400 objects that are needed to describe a PC and its user(s) to OS/400 Identify the key steps needed to install Client Access/400 on a personal computer
Audience: This course is intended for technical staff members who will be responsible for connecting one or more personal computers to an AS/400 computer system. It is also valuable for managers and other personnel who will participate in the decision to make such connections and determine how they will be used.
Prerequisites: This course assumes that you are familiar with the concepts and basic operations of both AS/400 and personal computer systems. A knowledge of data communications fundamentals is also required.
The course also assumes you have a basic understanding of Client Access/400 concepts and facilities. This prerequisite can be satisfied by successfully completing the Manta course Introduction to Client Access/400 for Windows 95/NT.
You may also have obtained these skills by taking other courses or through relevant work experience.
