Course Description:
This course describes the steps required to install Client Access Express on a personal computer. It also covers procedures that you will find useful in the day-to-day administration of Client Access Express. The course begins with a description of the various ways in which Client Access Express can be installed on a personal computer. These include installing from an iSeries or AS/400 system, another LAN file server, and the IBM-supplied CD-ROM.

Next, the course reviews the process of configuring TCP/IP on a PC. Because Client Access Express uses the TCP/IP facilities that are built into Windows, this process may have already been performed for you. The course then walks through the installation process, showing you how to configure Client Access Express and control which components are installed. You will also see how to create an AS/400 or iSeries connection definition and verify that all AS/400 and iSeries servers that will be needed by the user are available.

Next, the course investigates related security issues, including the use of multiple profiles on a Windows PC and the use of Windows 95/98/ME password caching. The course then shows you how to control which Client Access Express functions are available to the user. Two control mechanisms are available: the Windows System Policy Editor and the Operations Navigator Application Administration function. Next, the course describes the maintenance of Client Access Express using service packs. Tasks discussed include installing a service pack manually and performing a selective setup to install additional Client Access Express components.

Finally, the course shows how to solve several potential problems related to how virtual devices are assigned to Client Access Express users.

Audience: This course is intended for technical staff members who will be responsible for connecting one or more personal computers to an AS/400 or iSeries computer system.

Prerequisites: This course assumes that you are familiar with the concepts and basic operations of both OS/400 systems and personal computer systems. Knowledge of data communications fundamentals is also required.

The course also assumes you are already familiar with the basic use of Client Access Express. This prerequisite can be satisfied by successfully completing the Manta course, Introduction to Client Access Express.

Before Client Access Express can be used, TCP/IP and its related server programs must be configured and started on the OS/400 system. This process is described in the Manta series TCP/IP in the iSeries Environment.

You may also have obtained these skills by taking other courses or through relevant work experience.
