Overview - Mastering the AS/400
Synopsis
Mastering the AS/400, Third Edition introduces fundamental AS/400 concepts using a pragmatic, hands-on approach and prepares students to move directly into programming language, database management, and system operation courses.

This information-packed textbook emphasizes comprehensive understanding and skills in the areas of system/user interface, member-object-library relationships, use of CL commands, basic database concepts, and program development utilities.

Mastering the AS/400, Third Edition stresses student participation, where understanding comes from doing. Each lesson includes related lab exercises that ask questions and describe notable features along the way. When all the lab exercises have been completed, students will have created a complete, personalized working environment that includes an initial program, current library, output queue, and source physical files.

The third edition of this classic AS/400 textbook features a contemporary new look and format designed to aid student understanding and engagement. All lessons, labs, and AS/400 screens reflect V4R3 of OS/400. The book also includes a comprehensive glossary of key terms and a cross-reference to all CL commands covered in the lessons.

Using this book, students learn how to:
  • Work with different screen types
  • Run CL commands from the command line and with prompting
  • Tailor library lists
  • Change their user profiles
  • Use PDM and SEU to create database-file source members coded in DDS
  • Insert and update using DFU and SQL
  • Generate screen displays and printed reports using Query/400
  • Design menus and display screens with SDA
  • Code, compile, and execute CL programs
